QUORA QUESTION #22

Posted on: July 11, 2021

QUESTION:

What are your thoughts on the EU’s decision to consider biomass an acceptable energy source to meet their climate change goals?

ANSWER:

(1): The IPCC, the UN, and climate science in general appear to be unsure on this issue. They have gone back and forth on biofuels over the last 40 years or more going through periods of promoting biofuels (all references to biofuels in this discussion are inclusive of biomass) to the point of allocating carbon credits that can be traded in the carbon credits market. And then a decade or so later reversing their position and crying foul against biofuels because it’s still CO2 that is being emitted and the emission is anthropogenic (human caused).

(2): The original and official position of the theory of AGW (anthropogenic global warming) is that the issue is fossil fuel emissions because the carbon in fossil fuels is millions of years old and not part of the current account of the carbon cycle such that the injection of this external carbon into the carbon cycle is an artificial perturbation of the carbon cycle that causes atmospheric CO2 to rise. In the strict interpretation of this argument, biofuel emissions are not millions of years old and not alien to the carbon cycle but part of the carbon cycle.

(3): The self imposed complication and confusion in this issue in climate science is best understood as a creation of their underlying activism against fossil fuels. If we look at the history of anti fossil fuel activism from the 1960s to the present, climate science can be understood as its latest incarnation. The simultaneous acceptance of biofuels and villification of fossil fuels makes sense in the context of anti fossil fuel activism although this is not the official and stated position of the climate change movement.

(4): And therein lies the catch 22 and why climate science needs to tiptoe around the biofuels issue and why to this day we are still discussing this issue. Details in the documents linked below.

(5): The Carbon Credits Market: LINK: https://tambonthongchai.com/2019/09/30/cer/

(6): The origins of emission trading and how it is supposed to work: LINK: https://tambonthongchai.com/2019/03/12/acidrain/

EXPLAINS HOW EMISSION TRADING IS SUPPOSED TO WORK. (The climate change emission trading does not adhere to this structure and it is not how the climate change emission trading works.

CONCLUSION: THESE CONTRADICTIONS IN THE CLIMATE CHANGE MOVEMENT OF OUR TIME ARE THE EVIDENCE THAT CLIMATE CHANGE IS ANTI FOSSIL FUEL ACTIVISM DISGUISED AS CLIMATE SCIENCE.

In addition to your points there is a practicality issue with bio-fuels. They provide diffuse energy so it takes a lot of whatever biomass you are using to get enough energy. Just another practical dead end.
