CRITICAL COMMENTARY

TO COVER THE STATE OF FLORIDA WITH 2 INCHES OF WATER WE WOULD HAVE TO MELT 8652 TONNES OF ICE IN A SINGLE DAY. THIS IS ACTUALLY AN INSIGNIFICANT AMOUNT IN THE CONTEXT OF ICE LOSS DATA FOR GREENLAND WHERE THE MELT SEASON IS ABOUT 5 MONTHS FROM JUNE TO SEPTEMBER. BECAUSE ICE MELT IS SEASONAL, THE DAILY MELT RATE FOR ANY GIVEN DAY DOES NOT HAVE A USEFUL INTERPRETATION. BOTH THE CLIMATE SCIENCE IMBIE TEAM AND NASA RELY EXCLUSIVELY ON THE ANNUAL RATE. THE ACTUAL MELT RATES RECORDED BY THE IMBIE TEAM AND BY NASA’S ICE-SAT-2 SHOW ANNUAL ICE MELT AT MUCH HIGHER RATES THAN THAT NEEDED TO COVER FLORIDA WITH 2 INCHES OF WATER IN ONE DAY. THESE ANNUAL MELT RATES ARE REPORTED AS 250 TO 350 GIGATONNES PER YEAR. THE HIGHEST ANNUAL MELT RECORDED IS 370 GIGATONNES. IN A RELATED POST WE NOTE AS FOLLOWS:

At 370 gigatons per year, the Greenland ice sheet will be gone in 7,100 years while raising sea level at a rate of  about 1 mm/year  until the sea level rises 7.36 meters 7,100 years from now. The daily rates cannot be annualized because the ice melt is seasonal with the ice sheet losing ice mostly in July and August and gaining ice in winter. 

THIS MEANS THAT EVEN AT THE HIGHEST ANNUAL MELT RATES RECORDED IT IS NOT SOMETHING TO LOSE SLEEP OVER. IT ALSO MEANS THAT THE DAILY RATE REPORTED OF COVERING FLORIDA WITH 2 INCHES OF WATER IS NEITHER RELEVANT NOR SCARY BECAUSE THE IMPLIED MELT RATE IS RELATIVELY SMALL AND PERHAPS TOO SMALL TO REPORT IT IN TERMS OF GIGATONNES PER YEAR SO THAT THE 2 INCHES TO COVER FLORIDA WAS THE NEEDED DIVERSION.
